When it comes to finding a place to live in Scotland, our country has no shortage of places with stunning scenery, strong local communities and top-notch local cafes and restaurants.

Many will often be looking for the best place to live and while this list will differ from person to person, it’s always great to see which areas are booming – and which are making it onto lists of the best places to live.

Today (April 8), the The Sunday Times Best Places to Live list has been released and it’s safe to say we’re very pleased with the results.

The winner, as listed by The Sunday Times for 2022, is the Isle of Bute, Argyll. It tops a list of seven Scottish places chosen by The Sunday Times in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

But on top of that, North Berwick in East Lothian has been listed as one of the next places to move, if you haven’t already!

North Berwick, which was on the list, is considered a ‘gem of the East Lothian coast’ and therefore is ‘too beautiful to leave off the list, thanks to its unbeatable combination of schools , independent shops, laid-back beach life and trains to the capital.”

The Sunday Times expert judges behind the guide assess a wide range of factors, from schools, transport and broadband to the culture, green spaces and health of the high street.

In addition to this, they also seek to celebrate the improvement of cities, towns or city centers; attractive, well-designed homes and places brimming with community spirit – which the pandemic has shown to be the most vital quality of all.

Other names listed in the Sunday Times Best Places to Live include:

  • Braemar, Aberdeenshire
  • Culross, Fife
  • Dunblane, Stirling
  • Glasgow, Shawlands
  • Melrose, Borders
  • Attention: apart from the regional winner, the other places are not classified but classified in alphabetical order.

Helen Davies, editor of The Times and The Sunday Times, said: “The Sunday Times list of best places to live is necessarily subjective. Be guided by the statistics and you will never grasp the spirit of a place. For that, you have to visit to take into account that “you have to be here” feeling. Is the pub dog friendly eg? Can we live without a car? How are the schools and homes? Is it multicultural and multigenerational, and can it offer a good way of life to lots of different people?

“Ten years ago when we launched the inaugural listing, London’s gravitational pull was strong, the WFH revolution had yet to reach our doorsteps and the high streets were stacked with chains. How times have changed – and how welcome this change is.
